Surrealism, Salvador Dali and Max Ernst
This course will serve as an introduction to the surrealist movement of the early Twentieth Century. The students will study Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, and create works influenced by the artists unique style and contributions to the movement. The course will the students to engage in dialogue in open critique, to discuss intent and meaning within the Surrealists works. The students will also critique their own works and the works of their peers. Students will primarily work in pencil and paint on paper and canvas as well as collage. The course will also utilize basic tradition drawing and painting principles.
Course Objectives students will
• Know the Surrealism movement and its distinctive characteristics
• Recognize specific artists within the Surrealist movement
• Show understanding by creating Surrealist works in traditional mediums
• Apply principles of surrealism within their works to show comprehension
• Create unique Surrealist work using traditional methods
• Distinguish Surrealist works from works of the movement using compare and contrast with works of other movements
• Explain choices and themes within their Surrealists works and how it correleates with Surrealism
•Compare their works with peers and works of Surrealist painters, in a critique setting
