Introduction/Refresher to Figure Drawing
*ages 16 and above
The human body is a work of art and a breath-taking orchestration of many parts working together. It contains within in its forms, every possible form and therefore to master drawing from it enables one to draw everything. It is also the most complicated and fascinating subject to draw and for this reason it intimidates many, baffles some, and leaves many preferring to do seascapes. However, there is a reasonable way to approach drawing the figure that is not as complicated as knowing how the shin bone is connected to the thigh bone or much else about the muscles and bones but instead, relies upon the artist’s ability to see and interpret what they see .This must include a certain amount of knowledge about surface anatomy, mostly in the form of landmarks and these will be covered in this course. Some prior knowledge of how to draw will be assumed. This is not an anatomy course. Charcoal is a little messy but it is also the most forgiving medium, cleans up easily and you can virtually paint with it.A model’s fee will be assessed and collected the first class so please bring along a blank check to that class. Any further questions call Jan 860-817-1650.
*minors must have written parental consent
Our Teacher
Jan LoomisIs an award winning figurative sculptor who could always draw (no, really, from the time she could hold a crayon!). She graduated U. of Hartford Art School cum laude 1987. In the past Jan has served on numerous Art Boards including The Society of CT Sculptors (founding President), American Medallic Sculpture Association, and CT Women Artists. One of Jan’s favorite ways to work has always been combining drawing with sculpture and creating bas reliefs (Reading Inspires Imagination, hanging outside of the Public Library in Enfield, CT was recognized by the Smithsonian as public art worth saving). Recently, Jan has focused her efforts on small “art medals.” Jan loves sharing her passion for the human form as an art subject and has taught at The West Hartford Art League as well as numerous Adult and Continuing Education classes in CT. She put up an ecorché under the tutelage of David Klass in NYC and studied under Lloyd Glasson, Tony Antonius and the late Paul Zimmerman. She has attempted numerous ways to avoid being an artist, and to support her art habit only to realize that just doing art is the best thing in the world she can do and teaching it is a close second. Both make her deliciously happy and she is delighted to share her excitement with others.
