A STEAM curriculum focuses its attention on five disciplines, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. STEAM provides an education that offers students the best chance for innovation and solid skills in learning.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education is based on skills generally using the left half of the brain and thus is logic driven. Much research and data shows that activities in the Arts, which uses the right side of the brain supports and fosters creativity, which is essential to innovation. An example of STEAM in action is the development of Apple’s iphone. We see advanced technical, engineering and math skills combine with design to create a tool for the masses. Artwell seeks to create this curriculum and encourages learners of all ages to expand on the ideas presented by this education model of the future.

Update March 26, 2015: At the Torrington Middle School, Artwell faculty member Jacob Aronow assists TMS faculty member Julie Palmer with weekly Art Club. Joseph Brien (Lost Art Workshops), and Gay Schempp collaborate with TMS/Artwell STEAM Team to provide students and teachers with enrichment workshops.

Urban Plant Identification, Digital Photography and Documentation Θ Courtney Ieronimo November 2–December 7 Saturday 1:00-3:00pm ages 8 and up Θ
In this Course students will gather and identify plants in Torrington’s urban landscape. We will photograph them in their natural state and return to the classroom to document and preserve them on botanical plates. Just like Thoreau in the woods surrounding Concord, Massachusetts, we will study the plants that live beside us in our man made environment. This course covers botanical Identification, digital photography, scientific research and art. A digital camera is needed for this class. A laptop or tablet is helpful, but not required.
Nature’s Patterns and Geometries with Joe LaRose
Saturday Mornings 10:00–12:00 ages 10 and up
Together we will discover the magic of nature’s patterns and geometries. In this six week course we will cover topics like PI, platonic solids, geodesic domes, and Nature’s universal mathematics that connects it all. This will make math fun as you apply it to create ART. We will build models and talk about techniques for building large structures. Geodesic domes have a huge variety of uses and functions, your imagination will be exploding with possibilities! Plus some other surprises. No matter what age, you will take home with you knowledge that will guide you forever. There will be hand outs and special videos shown each week.
Outcomes: students will
• be able to apply nature’s principles in your own unique way and learn how to calculate the parts to build theses geometries for yourself.
• be introduced to many resources that I have collected over the past seven years to help you on your way.
• walk away with an understanding of how nature creates and how to recognize this in your everyday activities.*Materials for the first class:
